Assam Bengal Navigation Taster India River Cruise

Upon arrival at Kolkata International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Authentic India Tours representatives who will transfer you to your hotel for a 2 night stay.

The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy the wonderful facilities of your luxury hotel or explore the local area. Just a short walk away is the new Kolkata market.

Today is an opportunity to discover this charming metropolis with a full days sightseeing tour. It’s an early start to visit the colourful flower market, followed by a boat ride on the Hooghly River.

The afternoon’s sightseeing includes the Victoria Memorial, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Indian Museum, one the largest museums in India.

This morning you will be transferred to Kolkata Airport for the flight to Guwahati.

At the airport, you will be met by your driver and taken to your ship close to the great Saraighat Bridge for the start of your cruise. As the afternoon progresses you will cruise downstream to visit the riverside village of Vijaynagar and get the chance to meet some local people.

This morning your cruise continues upstream to the bustling little town of Sualkuchi. Established as the centre of Assamese silk production, your walking tour of the town will include a visit to the weaving workshops. Here you will witness the whole process of silk manufacture, from cocoon and spinning to dyeing and finally hand-weaving into exquisite mekhela chadars, a two-piece sari, the traditional attire of an Assamese woman.

Later you visit Hajo, a place sacred to Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists. The tour starts with a hilltop Muslim shrine with far-reaching views over the surrounding rural landscape, followed by, a simple Hindu temple with its frieze of elephants and a sacred Buddhist tank full of great carp, catfish and turtles.

The cruise then continues with an overnight stop near the Saraighat Bridge.

This morning your journey upstream takes you to Pandu Docks to go on a short sightseeing tour of Guwahati City.

Later, the day continues with a drive to Nilachal Hill to see the holy Kamakhya Temple. With its tantric rites and animal sacrifice, the more squeamish may prefer to just enjoy the exteriors. This is followed by a stop at the poignant commonwealth war graves cemetery

You will then cross by country boat to the mid-stream peacock island with its population of Golden Langurs before reboarding the ship and cruising pass Kurua on the north bank.

Today your cruise takes you past jungle covered hills and along the Mayong River. From here it is a short ride on a country boat to the roadhead for the drive to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

This small park has a dense population of the Indian One Horned Rhinoceros. As you venture through the park on a jeep safari there is an excellent chance of sighting some of these magnificent beasts.

Later you will return to the ship to cruise to a riverside village, which you can explore on foot and learn more about local life.

For the last night the ship docks close to the picturesque Aswaklanta Temple on the north bank opposite Guwahati.

All too soon the cruise is over and you will disembark after breakfast near Saraighat Bridge.

You will be transferred to Guwahati airport where you will fly to Kolkata. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

In plenty of time you will be taken to Kolkata Airport to board your return flight.
