Once the royal capital of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century, you can find Halebidu (formerly called Dorasamudra or Dwarasamudra) in the Hassan District of Karnataka.
This temple town houses some amazing examples of Hoysala architecture, including the decorative Hoysaleshwara and Kedareshwara temples.
Marvel at the intricately-carved outer walls of the Hoysaleshwara temple, depicting playful marching elephants, mythical creatures and legends from Hindu texts. The soapstone Kedareshwara Temple dates back to 1219 A.D. and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
A visit to the Archaeological Museum, containing over 1500 sculptures and inscriptions from the surrounding area, is the perfect accompaniment to a tour of the temples.
