Located in the heart of the Thar Desert, the former medieval trading centre of Jaisalmer is an enchanting destination known as the Golden City due to its yellow sandstone architecture. Visit the Fort and its Jain temples, Gadisar Lake, the intricately carved Havelis or watch the sun set against the desert backdrop.
Jaisalmer Fort on Meru Hill was built in 1156 and played host to many battles. The enormous sandstone walls turn gold as the sun sets, hence the nicknamed of the Golden Fortress.
Jain culture had a heavy influence on Jaisalmer, especially the seven Jain temples built between the 12th and 15th centuries within Jaisalmer fort. These medieval buildings contain exquisite art and were constructed from yellow sandstone. You'll also find some of the oldest libraries in India in Jaisalmer, along with a variety of pilgrimage centres.
There are several museums in Jaisalmer, including the Akal Fossil Park Museum, Cactus Park Museum in Kuldhara, Desert Culture Centre & Museum, Government Museum, Folklore Museum, Fort Palace Museum, Tanot Museum and War Museum.
