The climate of Kerala has distinct seasons. Throughout the year, daily temperatures usually rise from the lows of 20°C to between 27°C and 32 °C. The state is directly exposed to the southwest monsoon, which prevails from July through to September, but it also receives rain from the reverse (northeast) monsoon from October and November. Rainfall averages about 3000 mm (115 inches) annually with some slopes receiving more than 200 inches (5,000 mm) of rainfall.

The coastal zones of Kerala are dotted with beautiful coconut palm groves, while much of the Western Ghats and riverine areas are covered with verdant rainforests and tropical deciduous forests. The upland region is known for its rolling grasslands.
Kerala is home to an array of wildlife. Mammals include sambar deer, gaurs (wild cattle), Nilgiri tahrs (wild goatlike animals), elephants, leopards, tigers, bonnet monkeys, rare lion-tailed macaques and Hanuman and Nilgiri langurs.
Kerala has a well-developed road and railway system. It is connected with the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka by national highways. A railway coming from the east through the Palghat Gap in the Western Ghats meets with a railway running from north to south through the state and on to Kanniyakumari, the southernmost town of India. Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Cochin (Kochi) have international airports.
