Mumbai, Maharashtra

Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is located on the west coast of India and is made up of seven islands. Mumbai is where the money is, as one of the world’s top ten centres of commerce, it is the wealthiest city in India, with the highest number of millionaires and billionaires. It’s also rich in culture, housing the Bollywood and Marathi cinema industries, and also notorious for its lengthy traffic jams!

Gateway of India

The city’s top tourist attraction is the Gateway of India, a huge monumental arch greeting arrivals by boat on the waterfront overlooking the Arabian Sea. Built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the monument wasn’t completed until 1915, so they only saw a cardboard model of it!

Elephanta Caves

Located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour, the ornate Elephanta Caves are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and an unmissable excursion. The rock cut stone sculptures hewn from solid basalt rock portray Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography. These fantastic carvings include the 20 feet high Trimurti Sadashiva (three-faced Shiva), Nataraja (Lord of dance) and Yogishvara (Lord of Yoga).

Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai
