Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Discover Jodphur

Set amidst the stark landscape of the Thar Desert,  Jodhpur is known as the Sun City because of the number of bright and sunny days it experiences, and as the Blue City from the blue hued houses in the old area of the city, painted to discourage termites due to adding copper sulphate to limewash. It is a popular destination offering a number of forts, palaces and temples, along with shopping bazaars and delicious culinary delights.

Things to do in Jodphur

  • Enjoy the Jodhpur cuisine. Jodphur is famed for its fantastic food, including sweets, mirchi bada (a type of filled fritter) and the exotic dessert mawa kachori. You can try many of these in the interconnecting Sadar bazar (also known as Ghanta-Ghar), Tripoliya market and Nai-Sarak Market – ideal places to buy holiday souvenirs.
  • Mehrangarh Fort. Right in the middle of the city you’ll see the grand Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India. Built around 1459, it contains several palaces famed for their impressive courtyards and intricate carvings. There are seven gates, one of which still bears the imprint of cannonballs fired by attacking armies. The Fort contains several galleries, including an armoury, fine examples of Marwar paintings and the Turban Gallery, documenting the history of turbans in Rajasthan. Batman fans will recognise the fort from the prison scene at the start of The Dark Knight Rises. Director Christopher Nolan said the locals thought the team “Were nuts shooting in 120-degree (Fahrenheit) heat” back in 2011.
  • The Jaswant Thada cenotaph dates back to 1899 and is the cremation ground for the Marwar royal family. It is made from intricately carved thin, polished marble sheets, softly illuminated by the glow of the sun. In the mausoleum grounds, you’ll find a small lake, ornate gazebos and a tiered garden.
