If you are looking to go trekking in India try the 5 day Munnar adventure. This trekking and camping activity holiday offers an excellent opportunity to explore the Western Ghats and experience its diverse habitation and breathtaking landscape. A moderate level of fitness is required for this tour as there are some steep climbs en-route. The distance covered each day is between 8 and 16 km.

This is a private tour for 2 or more people which is flexible and can be tailored from 2 to 5 day programmes. We are happy to develop special trekking and camping itineraries based on your requirement and group size. The best time to go trekking in Munnar is from December to February. The temperature may range from 2 °C to 13 °C. and it can be especially chilly during the night time so be prepared and keep your warm clothes handy.

Included within this private trekking tour is an English speaking guide, tent accommodation and sleeping bags at campsites with facilities plus a full board meal basis including snacks and water. Trekking in India – 5 Day Munnar Adventure Itinerary

The Munnar trekking in India adventure starts in Silent Valley walking through the tea gardens, where you will see the local people picking tea. This soon makes way for the mixed forest and a gradual ascent to a small ridge at about 2270 meters. We then continue through rolling grasslands past streams, before enjoying  views of Meesapulimalai, the second highest peak in South India. The days trek includes several inclines and slopes including reaching the peak of Meesapulimalai at 2637 meters. Apart from wonderful views of the surrounding hills, the trek is also an ideal route for spotting endemic birds like the Nilgiri pipit and Broad tail grass bird as well as mammals such as the endangered Nilgiri Thar, Gours and if you’re lucky an elephant or two.

After breakfast we will start our trek passing through pine forests, rolling grasslands and the dense shoals of Camp Malai. Todays route then takes us via the valley of Nila Kurinji with stunning views of lakes and mountain ranges. After a couple of inclines and drops including a bit of a steep descend, we reach the tea plantations of the Yellapatty Estate. The trek continues through the tea fields followed by a short climb through the evergreen forest, before reaching the mountain cliff for the overnight camp. Camp Footprint on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats offers panoramic views with the clouds floating under your feet.

Total travel time  –  6-8 hours

Camp Footprint’s location on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats gives you the opportunity to experience a breathtaking sunrise … as long as the weather behaves!

After breakfast, we will start our trek to the mountain ridges of the eastern slopes. The fantastic views you will enjoy today include tea plantations, the lowlands of Tamil Nadu stretching out before you, and Meesapulimalai, the second highest peak in South India. For nature lovers, there’s the chance to spot some endemic birds and wildlife as you pass through a variety of landscapes including shola forests, grasslands, mountain forests and tea plantations. We also pass a couple of villages before arriving at Top Station for the overnight camp.

Total travel time – 4-5 hours

This morning, we leave Top Station for the steep trek down to Korangani. The interesting journey will take you via a well-marked horse track which was used by British officers during the time of Raj, through beautiful small tribal villages and a variety of coffee plantations, cotton plantations, grasslands and mixed forests. Korangani has few small tea shops, a temple dedicated to the local deity and is a bird and butterfly heaven with the area supporting 60 species of bird. Our camp is set in terraced cotton plantation, with a small house. Overnight camp and dinner is provided. (Temperature here will be warmer than other camps). There is a small village school close to the campsite, and there will be an opportunity to meet teachers and students if you wish.

Total Travel Time – 4-5 hours

After breakfast, if time permits, we can visit the local village or school. Most people then travel to Madurai, Thekkady or Munnar to continue their South India Adventure.
