Jorhat is one of the oldest centres of trade and commerce in Assam and gets its name from the two major markets it is built around (‘jor’ or ‘jora’ means two and ‘haat’ means market in Assamese). This fascinating destination was once the capital of the influential Ahom dynasty between 1228-1826.

  • Jorhat is a tea lover’s paradise! Feast your eyes on around 130 spectacular emerald-green tea estates dotted around, growing world-famous Assam tea, which you can smell in the air. You’ll also find the renowned Teklai Experimental Centre in Jorhat, one of the largest tea research centres in the world.
  • Discover the culture. Jorhat is an interesting mix of busy markets, vibrant cultures, diverse tribal communities, and lively festivals. Sites of interest include Thengal Bhawan, where the first Assamese newspaper was released, the Raja Maidam vault where the ashes of King Purandar Sinha are preserved and the Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar, an ancient place of Assamese worship which is a big tourist draw
  • The Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is worth a visit to see hoolock gibbons,  native to northeast India
  • To get your shopping fix, head to Chowkihat and Macharhat, the two major markets the city is built around
  • Invest in some jewellery. Jorhat is a major hub for beautiful Assamese jewellery, made by local craftsmen using skills passed down from generation to generation. The most popular is the pure gold Ahom (Assamese) jewellery, with its signature slightly dull shine and filled with lac embedded with gemstones and gold leaf
