Matale is a large administrative capital and urbanised centre located at the heart of the Central Hills of Sri Lanka. It lies in a broad, fertile valley at an elevation of 1,194 ft above sea level. Surrounding the city is the Knuckles Mountain Range, the foothills were called Wiltshire by the British.

It is also known as the spice capital of Sri Lanka and is home to some of the best spice gardens.
