Tadoba National Park, Maharashtra
Tadoba is much more than just a national park, it’s a captivating region in Maharashtra in central India where wilderness, culture, and local life join together to create an unforgettable experience. Although it’s mainly known for its impressive tiger reserve, Tadoba also offers visitors a chance to discover quiet villages, scenic landscapes, and rich traditions nestled amidst the forests.
The Wild Side
Most visitors head to the Andhari Tiger Reserve, one of India’s oldest and largest wildlife sanctuaries. At over 1,700 square kilometres, it’s a haven for Bengal tigers, leopards, wild dogs and a huge array of birdlife. The mix of dense forests, grassy meadows, sparkling lakes, and rugged hills creates a variety of habitat for many creatures, and a paradise for nature lovers!
Beyond the Park
Tadoba’s charm extends beyond safaris, with small villages surrounding the park offering a glimpse into rural Maharashtrian life from traditional farming to local crafts and cuisine. You can also enjoy peaceful walks, birdwatching, and quiet moments by rivers and lakes.
When to Visit
The best time to explore is between October and June. The park closes during the monsoon (July to September), when the heavy rains bring the forest to life, but plays havoc with travel! The cooler months offer ideal conditions for wildlife spotting and outdoor activities.
Getting Around
Nearest airport: Nagpur, about two and a half hours by road.
Nearest train station: Chandrapur railway station is around 45 km from the park entrance.
