Textiles and Tribes of Gujarat Tour Itinerary

Swaminarayan Temple, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Swaminarayan Temple, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Your Gujarat tour begins in Ahmedabad, a city where the past and present sit side by side. On one side of the Sabarmati River, the old quarter is a maze of narrow lanes, havelis, mosques and busy markets. On the other side, you find a modern city with broad streets and striking new architecture. Once called the “Manchester of the East” for its thriving textile mills, Ahmedabad is still known for its crafts and fabrics.

Over two days, you will explore the city on foot, visiting the Calico Textile Museum with its antique saris and shawls, and stepping into the peaceful Sabarmati Ashram to reflect on Gandhi’s life and work. As evening falls, the carvings of the Adalaj Stepwell glow in the fading light, and you can sit down to a traditional Gujarati feast at the much-loved Vishala restaurant.

Over two days you’ll explore its rich heritage, from the havelis, mosques and vibrant bazaars of the old city to the exquisite Calico Textile Museum. A visit to Sabarmati Ashram offers moving insight into Gandhi’s life, while the intricately carved Adalaj Stepwell reveals the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Evenings bring the chance to enjoy authentic Gujarati cuisine, including a memorable dinner at the atmospheric Vishala restaurant.

From here you continue to Modhera and its Sun Temple, a masterpiece of 11th-century architecture dedicated to Surya the sun god.

Your base for the next two nights is Bajana, on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. Here the landscape opens into salt marsh and semi-desert, where wild asses and birdlife thrive in the Wild Ass Sanctuary. A jeep safari is the best way to experience the scale of this wilderness.
