Chidambaram is an  inland town in Tamil Nadu, surrounded by sprawling countryside, with the Nataraja temple complex at it’s heart. It’s beloved as one of the holiest of all Indian sites dedicated to the God Shiva, as well as being noted for it’s remarkable intricate Dravidian architecture. In fact, all of Chidambaram is steeped in antiquity, while nature lovers can also tour the dense and enticing Pichavaram Mangrove Forest found close by.

Things to do in Chidambaram

  • Visit the Nataraja complex, where you’ll find the incredible Nataraja Temple. Dedicated to the God Shiva, the huge colourful towers are visible for miles around. 
  • Fertile Forests – Not far from Chidambaram, you’ll find Pichavaram, the second largest mangrove forest in the world and home to a variety of birds including pelicans, snipes and spoonbills.
  • Chidambaram plays host to many festivals. Natyanjali in February is not to be missed – dancers from all over the country come together to present a dance offering. The annual chariot festival is also a sight to behold!
