Minneriya National Park - Sri Lanka

If you love elephants, then you’ll love Minneriya National Park, where you can see the largest known meeting place of Asian Elephants in the world. During August and September, the Great Elephant Gathering sees up to 350 elephants migrate from Wasgamuwa National Park to Minneriya in search of food, shelter, and to take advantage of the large Minneriya Tank, a huge 3rd-century reservoir.

The varied habitat of forests, scrublands, grasslands and wetlands over 8,890 hectares is also home to many creatures including Sri Lanka’s two endemic monkeys, the purple-faced langur and toque macaque. The rare and endangered Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear are also resident, as is the grey slender loris and many endemic and threatened birds.
