Located just outside Dibrugarh on a working tea estate, the Mancotta Chang Bungalow is a quintessential colonial-era stilted bungalow. The word ‘Chang’ means ‘on stilts’ and this ancient design from Arunachal Pradesh was created to protect properties from wild animals and flooding.
The owners have lovingly restored this 150-year-old residence into a homestay full of character, with low-slung chairs, parquet floors and teak writing tables.
This charming property is fronted by lawns and lush gardens, which are perfect for an evening stroll to spot a variety of visiting feathered friends. Relax on the patio, balcony or in the reading room before sampling delicious Assamese cuisine in the dining hall furnished with equestrian-themed 19th-century sketches and prints.
