Kumbakonam

Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, South India

Housing around 188 brightly coloured temples and monuments, it’s unsurprising that Kumbakonam is known as the ‘Temple Town’ or ‘City of Temples’.

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple was  built in the 7th century and is one of the oldest in Kumbakonam.

Nageswaraswamy Temple has a shrine to the Sun god Surya who was rumoured to have worshipped Shiva here.

Sarangapani temple with its twelve storey tower is one of the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 Alvar saint-poets.

The Ramaswamy Temple is decorated with scenes from the Hindu epic Ramayana and is the destination for millions of pilgrims from all parts of India to take a holy dip once every 12 years during the Mahamaham festival.
