Munnar, Kerala

Discover Munnar

The misty air is an intoxicating blend of scents from tea and spice plantations and naturally occurring sandalwood forests, while the lush range of greenery across the surrounding hills is likely to take your breath away. An incredible array of local flora and fauna is on display at any of the many sanctuaries that have sprung up to preserve the area’s ecological heritage from the damage caused by past plantations.

If you’re lucky, you might spot the mystical-seeming Nilgiri Tahr or one of the local species of giant squirrel, and who could resist a visit to one of the elephant parks in the area? A visit to a tea plantation is certainly worthwhile for any tea lovers. It is fascinating to witness the process of manufacture from crop picking to flavour adjustment, not to mention a description of the history of tea production in the area, and then finish up with a sampling of the finished product as you look out over the rows of green. Hardy hikers will be keen to lose themselves in the glorious outdoors; a plethora of guided treks are on offer and, if you choose well, you will be rewarded with the sight of a waterfall for your efforts.

There are also a number of lakes in the area, which you are welcome to explore by boat, while you take in the serene surroundings. Munnar truly is an exceptional place to visit and you are sure to reap the benefits from the peaceful scenery.
